Feature Artist Spring 2009 - Odette Kemp - Paper Artist

Artist Profile:

Odette Kemp has lived on the North West Coast all her life, spoending her formative years in Smithton. Having always had an interest in art, Odette finally took the time to further this interest in her late 40's.

Starting with a local artist friend who advised on technique and the various methods of drawing and painting, Odette also attended watercolour classes. Experimentation with ink and watercolour monoprints led to further inspiration. She found her niche working with mixed media, particularly with collage, after attending a workshop run by Liz Francis. This inspired her to try out various papers and textures to make up a picture, using ink and/or watercolour monoprints as a basis, and creating mainly abstract landscapes.. Sometimes found items, i.e. moss, leaves and - more recently - wood offcuts, small stones and buttons are included in the pictures.

Encouragement and support for her craft comes from Odette's husband, Roger, who is a very artistic and creative person, and from her four adult children, all of whom are talented artists in their own right.

In 2003 Odette won an award in the Annual City of Burnie TasArt exhibition. in 2006, she sold both works that were exhibited in TasArt. In 2008, one work sold at the annual Artex (Cradle Coast) Exhibition. Other artwork has been sold at exhibitions held at various venus on the Coast.

Creative Paper, Burnie, was the venue for Odette's first major exhibition in December, 2008. Of the 23 works prepared for exhibition, one sold prior to and six during the exhibition.
